Formed in the UK in 1984 to meet the growing demand for independent consultancy services in the wind energy sector, Garrad Hassan has recently joined Germanischer Lloyd to form a one-stop-shop in renewable energy consultancy, offering a broad range of services, including; optimal design of wind farms, performance improvement of existing farms, measurement projects, inspection, and certification of turbines.
Together Garrad Hassan and Germanicher Lloyd will provide customers with a single service provider offering a fully integrated solution to challenges in technology, environmental and asset performance.
Garrad Hassan’s USA operation, Garrad Hassan Inc., is looking to recruit a Solar Engineer I. Garrad Hassan Solar has been active since 2007 having already reviewed over 500 MW of solar projects. The Solar Engineer I will be responsible for supporting the strong growth of GH Solar Engineering consulting services, both in the US market as well as world-wide. This position is responsible for a wide range of engineering duties in support of the GH Solar Engineering Group, and other areas as the need may arise. Such solar services apply to all types of grid connected solar technology.
This position can be based in any of the four Garrad Hassan America's offices (Austin, TX, Peterborough, NH; Portland, OR, or San Diego, CA) with willingness and availability to travel up to 25% of time for periods of a week or more at a time required. |Duties:||As a Solar Engineer I at Garrad Hassan, responsibilities will encompass a wide range of activities, including:|
•Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of solar construction documentation including, in whole or part:
oPlans and specifications;
oDesign calculations and studies;
oConstruction job books and QA/QC documentation;
•Conduct construction monitoring inspections of projects to verify compliance with:
oConstruction plans and specifications;
oAppropriate construction practice;
•Write detailed reports of reviews and inspections;
•Evaluate construction issues that arise as well as proposed remediation for such issues;
•Lead or participate in meetings and conference calls with developers, investors, lenders, and engineers regarding technical reviews and construction issues;
•Track and monitor project documentation, review and inspection status;
•Participate in relevant industry groups including Solar Electric Power Association and others, in order to:
oIncrease knowledge of technical, standards, and regulatory issues;
oRepresent GH in industry forums;
•Maintain professional engineering licensure in multiple states, including monitoring and completion of continuing education requirements;
•Mentor less-experienced solar engineers.
•Communicate and resolve technical issues with Clients; and for addressing concerns and issues of the Client related to the project, placing a premium on the Client’s time.
•An understanding of a broad range of engineering concepts including site assessment, energy optimization, site infrastructure, and site analysis and design.
•Familiarity with related disciplines involved in solar power project construction and operations including theory and practical knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Demonstrated capability with or understanding of:
•The range of grid connected solar technologies, with in-depth knowledge in at least one area (concentrated solar power is preferred or photovoltaic);
•Analysis and design of Site assessment and feasibility studies;
•Energy optimization of lay-out;
•Familiarity with investment costs and the supply chain value of projects;
•Applicable financial and tax incentives;
•Electrical systems, interconnection equipment and process, and metering and regulatory structures;
•Operations and maintenance;
•Evaluating as-built conditions with respect to intended designs and requirements;
Applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., ANSI, NEC, NESC, UL).
•Support multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to independently manage own priorities and workload.
•Fluent in Microsoft Office products and standard Solar Thermal software applications;
•Proficient writing and communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate complex engineering issues to lay individuals and groups;
•Able to establish and maintain good relations with clients;
•Self-starter with ability to schedule and prioritize tasks.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
•Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Sciences;
•3 plus years of applicable experience in grid connected commercial plants.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
•Preferred Licensed Professional Engineer.
•Valid driver’s license and acceptable MVR.
•Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
